Another weekend gone...

That's it.

I'm getting older by virtue of living through weekends. They seem to be coming and going more frequently. Therefore if I'm to stop the progress of time, and impending stage where I'll have to settle down, get a good job, marry, kids etc.... I've got to stop having weekends.

But by that token, I'll have to be at work longer. Every silver lining has a dark cloud.

So, Europe have won the Ryder Cup (played at the beautiful K Club in Ireland - venue of a scouting mission carried out by half of the Deane family on a trip to Ireland in 2002. Extremely posh golf setting [as you'd expect], but with realistic bar prices [as I remember - 3 pints and a coke for just over a tenner])

Now, I'm not the greatest sage on the golf scene, but I know what's happening (sort of). It was an impressive effort for the Europeans, helped in some way by the Americans playing badly! I think they'll have to reassess how they pick their side. None of this rookie nonsense from now on I think.

I didn't go out on Friday night; I think we were keeping our powder dry for Saturday night (more in a sec.). However on Saturday I'd arranged to meet up with Toby and his sister in town for a spot of punting.

I'd never realised that Toby had a sister (I mean, yes I knew that he had a sister, but I hadn't really thought about it). I certainly hadn't thought about the fact that they were twins. They are not identical (a joke which we shared on Saturday with the two of them).

We hired a punt from the Mill, and punted down the river to the Quayside. Now, I say we punted, however it was Toby who punted. There's something about standing on the back of a boat, propelling yourself with a pole down a river, which I know has seven different types of typhoid, that doesn't thrill me. However, this did free me up to give my "Backs" lecture. Which was enjoyed by all. Apart from Toby and Ailsa. Afterwards we went to the "Bath" for dinner, moving on to the Prince, and then to the Salisbury.

Ailsa's a policewoman (although that may be not very P.C. - Geddit!?!), and we were asking her about her work. Turns out she has to have her identification with her at all time. Which means she can arrest anybody at anytime. So, obviously we tried to get her to arrest someone. Although she wouldn't. That would have been a fun night.

It was Mitch's and Dan's birthday on Saturday (technically it was on the 19th, but that was a Tuesday [I had Salmon en paupiette for dinner that night]). A good turnout from all involved, with The Salisbury Arms being chosen as the venue. It's what a call a good local pub, in a residential area of Cambridge, but benefits from the fact that it is still very close to the centre of town. Therefore it was a short walk to the Fountain where proceedings continued. This is also where I left.

I've found that I have to plan myself a lot more over a weekend. For example, the original plan was to stay at Doss' house on Saturday night. However, a text during the evening (which said my brother was coming up for dinner at 2.00pm) meant that I had to change my plans, so that I would be at home to cook dinner. This then also means that I have to get a taxi back to my house, and sack off the offer from Doss for accommodation. Swings and roundabouts I suppose. However, I will be having dinner at Doss' tonight, with Big Jon who is back to finish off his dissertation for his PhD (only a couple of months late).

This week I intend to play some more squash (maybe on Wednesday and Thursday night), and get ready for my trip to the "Arc" next weekend.
